Drills
Drills are one of the most important things we educate our students on. Oak Ridge High School meets and exceeds the minimum safety training standards set by the state. Every semester we practice each of our emergency protocols. It is important for the students to know the difference between the various bells and situations. The only way they will become familiar with those is with repeated practice. Each semester we change the time that the drill happens. For example, we have started doing some of our drills during nutrition break (and not just class time) to make sure our students are prepared for every eventuality.
During fire/earthquake drills our students practice all of the protocols and then walk out to their assigned evacuation zone and line up for roll call. All of the staff members go through the drill as if it was real. The drill continues until all students are accounted for.
During our lockdown drill all students and staff have to practice the protocols put in place for ensuring their safety. The drill forces the students and staff to stop and consider where the safest place in the room will be for them in a lockdown situation.
We find that the constant repetition has the desired effect and that all of our students know exactly what to do in each type of emergency.
