In the case of a fire or earthquake (or other similar emergency) Oak Ridge has an on campus evacuation plan to ensure your student’s safety. Every classroom has a detailed evacuation plan in the room. All of the teachers go through a mandatory safety meeting at the beginning of the year to remind them of the safety plan. This meeting and subsequent drills helps teachers to remember the specifics of the plan as it relates to their room.
Every classroom has a designated evacuation zone. Some classrooms evacuate to the football field, others to the baseball field, etc. In case of emergency the teacher follows the proper protocol and then leads their students to the evacuation zone assigned to that classroom when appropriate.
At the evacuation zone each teacher has a placard on a clipboard. If all students are accounted for and safe they hold up a green placard. If they are missing a student or have a problem they hold up a red placard indicating that they need to communicate with the person in charge immediately. If they hold up a white placard with a red cross it means they have a medical emergency. At each zone there is a person in charge who has open communication with the administration. The administration routes whatever resources are needed to each evacuation zone through this simple and streamlined chain of command.
Whenever an actual emergency takes place Oak Ridge initiates its mass communication system. This system will call your home phone and cell phone numbers to deliver our recorded message with further instructions. The message will indicate if it was a simple emergency and school will continue afterwards or if it is a major emergency and you will need to pick up your student.
